Shift Kit and chip
I plan on purchasing an Ed Wright chip for my 93 Ruby. I would also like to get a shift kit, since I have a boring automatic trans.
Please explain to me what exactly the shift kit does. My understanding is that it enables you to shift the car more like a manual. In other words, the transmission does quicker upshifts and downshifts when shifting manually. Am I correct? Does a downshift still jerk the car like the automatic does?
Do I have all of this correct, or is there more to it? And where is the best place to buy one from?

Trans Go makes a very good shift kit. It can be set up for purely manual shift mode or auto mode which also allows manual shifting.
The shift kit provides for quicker and firmer shifts.
