Default LCD change

I changed out my center LCD and now have a lot of missing segments throughout all three LCDs. I assume that the pink blocks that join the LCDs to the PC board are to blame here.

What I do not understand is now the bottom half of the new LCD is now metric. The trip mileage and gas mileage are now in kilometers while the oil pressure and temp remain English. Switching the selector switch to Metric just brings on jumbled info.

Any ideas here? If the PC board is shot I am gonna be pissed for investing another $100 uselessly.

TIA!

I had similar issues. Make sure the LCD panel you just installed is flush. Mine was not and I learned the hard way and cracked them when tightening them down. You are correct about the pink conductors. they need to be pushed all the way in and have a good connections with the panel. I had to take mine apart and put it back together 3 times before it worked correctly.
if you haven't seen Brian's website it will walk you through step by step.

When I talked to the guy on ebay that sells the LCDs he said it had to be mounted perfectly for it to work correctly...Apparently these LCDs are very touchy...WW

The really odd thing is when I turn on the key, all segments light in like a test mode then it goes to missing segments and other weirdness. Another thing is the reserve light is always on.

Does the guy go by "witchcityeng"? This is where I found the new LCD source and in one listing he had his website address (vettesport.com). He has the same LCDs there $10 cheaper with free shipping.

Ranman, I love Brian's site, we are lucky to have such a resource.

Anybody know where I can get new pink blocks?

I know that there is a metric version of the center LCD. Maybe you got one of those by mistake.

As for the pink blocks, I suggest cleaning the gold plated contacts on the PC board with alcohol. Also check the pink blocks to make sure the conductors are visible (the black line down the middle).

His name is spelled Bryan. The site name batee is an acronym for Bryan A. Thompson Electrical Engineer.

Cliff, thanks for the info and correction. Its been a while since Ive visited Bryans site. I always wondered how or what "batee" was. It helped me eliminate a lot of things when my dash lights crapped out and gave me the values of each connector pin to see if the inputs were correct.

I will take the dash apart again and clean everything and make sure everything is contacting and centered. I have learned just because it looks clean doesnt mean anything. What about cleaning the blocks? Or what should I use there?

When I bought my car, the speedo LCD did not work correctly, the display came and went. I took it apart and took the old one out and noticed that the very fine edge on the LCD was chipped, I put in the new LCD and it didn't fit flat in the bezel, I took it out and checked the inside of the bezel. There were fine chips of glass sitting in the bezel preventing the new LCD to sit flush. I cleaned ALL of that and the other "seats" for the LCD's and reinstalled.

My advice, make sure that the seats where the LCD's sit are immaculately cleaned, do not force them to sit flush, check to see why they don't. The fine edges of those LCD's are extremely delicate and that's where the electrical contacts are made. Also, once the speedo is installed, do not clean the face of the LCD's with anything liquid, because it will seep back behind the bezel and screw up the electrical connections.

I was also thinking if the pink blocks are not making good contact I might grind down the PC board mounting pegs slightly so it would put a bit more pressure on the pink blocks and the contacts of the LCD and the PC board. Another idea I had was to put all the blocks under a few heavy books to "expand" them out a little.

Anybody have a source for new pink blocks or tell me what to use to clean them up?

Thanks for all of your responses!

failure analysis.pdf

LCD instructions.pdf

here are a couple docs that should help you out. I would just use alcohol to clean the pink rubber connectors(elastomerics)

the screens are very picky and I had to play with mine for a while until I had good contact but now it works great.

Thanks Ranman, I got the LCD pdf from Witch City but his printer was almost out of ink and some was illegible. The retainer spring gave me a bit of pause cuz I didnt see it when I took the dash apart.

I will tear the dash apart again tomorrow after I do the coolant system clean and flush for my Thanksgiving excursion to the SW VA mountains. I hope it snows!!
