Problem: Stater was dragging on start-up
The starter had been dragging on start-up. Made it sound very much like a dead battery. During the winter months it would not turn over at all, and in the hot summer is was still slow.
While thinking it might be around the distributor, I found that one of the spark plug wires was barely attached and one terminal had heavy corrosion. So I replaced the Cap and Rotor. THe problem was not as bad, but still there, dragging starter.
At this point the starter would fire the car right up and other times it would drag. This is when I finally started looking for places that sold starters. Seeing that Delco wanted $200-$300 made me think twice about getting one. I did some more searching and a remanufacturer in NC, http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com/, and still comes with a warranty. Oh did I mention that it cost $92 shipped to my door, then I'll get a $15 core refund(about the cost of shipping the old one back). When installing it I measured it against the stock Delco unit and found out that I needed 6mm or so worth of shims. Went to the local auto store and got $4 worth of them. I did some grinding down on the shims so they'd fit against the bellhousing.
Very easy install. Only 2 bolts hold it in. I didn't even have to remove the knock sensor like the manual recommended. Took me more time to jack the car up so I could work on it. The starter, when rotated around fits right between the header and the other small pipe running the lenth of the header.
Hope this inspires you all! :)
