Hey guys, I have a 1996 a4 LT1 with 2.59's in the rear. I want to buy 3.73's for my car, but theres so many companies that sell rearends and I have heard all these stories about 'whining' rearends, which I don't know if I really want. Right now I am looking at the ZIP rearend which seems priced nice, but is it comparable to a differential that cost 400-500$ more?
I hope someone can help ;) Michael
The Zipp rears do not have the yokes installed. Not sure how hard it is to install the yokes.
Ikerds http://www.vettepart.com/ is another supplier that vendors like MAD uses. I have heard of only one person having a problem with Ikerds rears, which I have had installed for more than 2 & half years.
I'm not sure if your's is an auto, but a lot of auto guys shop around for Dana 44 for around the same price as these Ikerd's units. Just a matter of timing - you can never find them when you want them and after you complete yours there are a gazzilion available cheap.
Call them and talk to justin about it. When I got mine the axle yokes did not come with it. Had to switch them off of my old one. It takes a heavy pair of snap ring pliers to do it. I have had no problem with mine. They are as quite as the orig. no noise at all. I have made about 60 passes at the drag strip on it as well. Someone said that Zip was now including the yokes with theirs now. But again ask Justin about it. If you go with Zip, or Ekerds or any of the major rebuilders I believe you will be fine. You get a warranty and not all the :bs saying it is noisey due to the gear manufacture etc. Good luck
I had my Dana 36 rebuilt from 2.59 to 3.59, total cost=$950.00. Thats with a Dana gear set. Anytime you can get Dana, go with Dana. Tom's differentials
out of California handles them as well. As for noise, at all depends on the teath and whether they are hilical cut or not. Some people think only the odd number sets are noise ? ? ? ? ? No noise from my 3.59, (odd number) and what a boost in response....... :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod:

I never heard of a 3.59. How many teeth does the ring gear and pinion have to get that ratio? I do agree, that the ratio should not effect the noise. It has to do with proper set up.
Now you're making me think, perhaps I have the numbers wrong, can't remember the tooth count (I even counted the revolutions after the mod) perhaps it was 3.54 ? ? ? I know it was 2.5? to 3.5? EXCUUUUUSE ME . . . . I'll get back to you with the count on the ring & pinion..... :flag
