I own a "91 auto coupe along with a "91" S10 blazer Lets just say I bought an engine the way I want it for the Vette how hard would it be for me to put my low mileage l98(under 20k) in my blazer? The Blazer is equiped with the 4.3 v6 and a 5speed and just went over 100k :chevy
I've seen a couple people and places on the web that show V8 motors in S-10s. I had an 85 with the 2.8L, I then sold it and got a 91 with the 4.3L, both 4x4. I would think it would be a pain to set up all the sensors. Most of the one's I've seen done don't use FI. Do a search for V8 swap and S-10... maybewww.s-series.org will have something as well.
Sute not be that hard to do go to Ebay and look up S10 there you will see some guys selling stuff to do this job some even have a book on how to do it right, but I dont think you have to do it all like the book is saying, but that book will help you a lot.
It really shouldn't be all that hard. If you look at Jegs and other parts catalogs you will probably find everything you need.
There are motor mounts and radiators, etc. The SBC into an S-10 really is pretty common. The L98 would probably make a real good motor for something like that, lots of low end grunt where you need it for that type of application.
As it has been said most of the engine swaps end up using a carb setup just because they don't want to try and make all the computer stuff work. Depending on how many gauges and such the blazer has it might not even be that bad to make it work with F/I. I know the Holley Commander system would make it run, you could get started with that.
I know a guy who put an LT1 into his 91 Z-28, I'm not sure what he does about the stock computer or anything like that, but I do know that he uses the commander and all of his gauges and such work just fine. The 91 Z would have had a different computer than the LT1, yet it all works, so it can't be as hard as everybody makes it out to be.
I think physically getting it to fit in there will be harder than getting the computer issues worked out, even that won't be too hard because it's a fairly common swap.
I saw an episode of "Trucks" where they bought a kit to install a '93 or newer LT1 into an S-10 pickup. This particular S-10 was brand new, but it should be very similar for the older style. They did a complete swap, including the computer to maintain the FI and the emission requirements. The only major changes that I saw was a new hood (which may be required for the higher L98 intake) and some modifications to the rad supports and fan assembly (the engine is longer than the V6 and requires an electric fan to fit). It is possible, good luck!
I've seen an LT4 in a 97 S-10. It was CRAZY! It was a smog legal swap too! The guy said it wasn't too hard. It ran RIGHT with our 92 LT1 vette. (The guy had NOOO traction whatsoever)
I seen a bunch of them over the years. Do you have 4wd? You may have to modify the oil pan if you do, the oil on my Syclone is real close to the front differential.
From what I understand, the 2.8 trucks are more desirable for the swap. Apparently the crossmember on the 4.3 or the motor mounts create problems. Either way, I'm told that 4.3 owners need to buy a bunch of 2.8 stuff to do the swap. The 4.3 transmission will bolt to the L98, but don't expect it to last long.
Anyway... http://www.jagsthatrun.com/ sells a book that's pretty thorough in what you need to do. You can get headers designed specifically for that swap, but I think they are an extremely tight fit. If you can get some thirdgen f-body TPI exhaust manifolds, they'll fit really well, but obviously will be somewhat of a restriction compared to headers.
When I was going to do my blazer I bought that book from jags that run. I ended up selling the s-10 before I did the swap though. I would say this is a must read book if your thinking about it, it lays out absolutely everything that needs to be done to make it realiable. Didn't seem too hard just alot of small things that end up making a big difference.
