Mine went out. Is it worth it to get it rebuilt? I want to keep the car as original as possible. :hat
Odds are that an '89 won't be worth much down the road even if it is all original. But if that is your concern just save the original one for "later" and get yourself a new one. First timers can replace them in about 45 minutes. When you get a few under your belt you can do it in about 20.

And you will get a few under your belt. :D
I think I'm on #5 by now or something like that.
Observation: The one that is on now is an original AC Delco alt. It has been the one that has lasted the longest. Like 4 years.
All the other short lived ones were like from autozone and places like that.
Food for thought.

Re: 89 Corvette alternator (Pollock)
I think is is far better to get YOUR alternator rebuilt then to buy a junk rebuilt from a auto-parts-chain. A good rebuilder will give you an alternator that is as good as or better than new.
I like marine rebuilders, find one with a good reputation.
Take your alternator to a good Auto electric shop. A good place will charge you $30-40 to rebuilt it and will put in heavier duty bearings and diods. The place I go takes cash and will rebuild it while you wait.
I just replaced mine yesterday on my 95. I got a AC Delco with lifetime guarantee from advance auto 140 bucks with a $55 core charge I has 140 amps the old one had 124 amps. headlights are brighter and the extra amperage is much better for my stereo components. The only installation difference was the stud on the battery conection is bigger on the 140 amp alternator I used a 5/16 lock nut.
