I pulled the knock sensor the other day to drain my block completely to change out coolant and distilled water. Of course the first thing that happened was the tangs let loose and it spun on me. Suggestions here was to use a pipe wrench but after looking at it I figured that it would be impossible to get it in there. Being a plumber by trade, I looked to my tool bag and pulled out my basin wrench. For those that have never seen them, it has a pipewrench style semi circular claw and a grooved place on the handle which you use to reach up into a small space to grip supply nuts and such. The one I have is a pro style with a square handle that you can put a crescent wrench on. That and a cheater bar on the basin wrench making a tee handle pulled the knock sensor out.
My basin wrench has saved me a time or two on the car as well as on the job constantly. If you get in a bind, it may help you as well. If you buy one, go ahead and get a good one to save some skin. Rigid is a good one.
