I have a 1991 L-98 that I love dearly but the darn thing has had this problem ever since I've owned it which is about 3 years now. Every time you turn the key its like flipping a coin. Heads the car is in a good mood and runs great, tails it will idle at about 250 rpm sounds like it is running on four cylinders and probably won't stay running for more than thirty seconds. However you can immediatley shut the car off and restart it and it will run fine. The only code the car throws is 32. I have replaced the O2 sensor. The only thing I have modified is I have removed the air pump and the EGR system.
If anyone has had the same trouble or is wise enough to enlighten me to a solution it would be unimagineably appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. sorry for writing a book

Re: THE NEVER ENDING PROBLEM HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (91 L-9ate)
First question- I assume this is "tuned-up", plugs, fuel filter, etc.?
Second question- Is it different at cold starts and warm starts and "hot" starts?
Third question- stock ECM, etc.?
The air/fuel ratio without the EGR may, I say MAY, be out of range for the ECM to compensate, now.
1. Check timing, bypass ECM, set at TDC + 6. Reconnect ECM bypass.
2. Reset the IAC: Start car with 10 to 15% throttle- run for 5 seconds, shut off, re-start.
If this doesn't help, we'll push along with other stuff.
Re: THE NEVER ENDING PROBLEM HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Skippy Stone)
Yes the car is freshly tuned up and it is the stock ECM. Cold and warm really don't seem to effect the outcome, while hot doesn't make a drastic difference it does seem to make the car more tempormental. My ignorance is about to shine through what is the best way to bypass the ecm and set the timing at +6 as you described?
thank you for your help :hat
Re: THE NEVER ENDING PROBLEM HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (91 L-9ate)
I think I have a similar problem. Mine has just started though. One day I started my car up and it almost stalled, and then when i go to run it, the whole interior lights flickered and then the car eventually died. I thought it was my alarm and some loose connections so I had the alarm removed and electrical taped up some open wires and the car ran fine for about a day then ended up going back to normal. I don't know whats wrong with my car, its something with the ignition, but my car has only the mods listed in my sig. and I just gave it a tune up, I haven't messed with the timing at all, only the fuel pressure which is about 48-50.

Next to the big computer box on the driver side, (between the engine and the computer box), there is a big gang of wires in protective wrap. (Lays right out in the open.) One wire with a connector sticks out of that gang of wires. Just disconnect the connector. This is the ECM bypass.

IF the battery is ok, then check ground wires first. Main power lines second. Miles? Electrical can be tough to track. So I won't speculate now. Other "bigger" possibilities are the Computer or the generator. Neither are tough to replace or that expensive. So don't worry.
P.S. I once had a mouse eat the wiring to my FX03 system and it took me WEEKS to figure that one out. :p:
Re: THE NEVER ENDING PROBLEM HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (91 L-9ate)
Code 32 is an EGR problem and you stated its been removed. If you removed the EGR valve, did you get your chip burned to work without egr?
If not,it may be worth checking into. Most speed density cars need the chip burned for this removal.Earlier MAF seems not as sensitive to EGR issues.
Also,by removing the EGR,do you mean just the EGR valve,or did you also remove the EGR feed pipe from the passenger side exhaust manifold to-intake manifold?
If you did'nt remove the feed pipe, when you start the car,EGR gasses will pass into the motor causing rough running and stalling. This is because the EGR valve is gone and isnt blocking the gasses on start up,making combustion get too cold to run right.
I dont know the extent of your mods and removal so I added all that. Its hard to say whats wrong without knowing more.
IS there a reason you removed the EGR and did this code 32 start before the remvoal or after?
Let us know.
:)

My $0.02 - check the HEI coil and the spark plug wires. My 88 was starting to get the stumbles at idle. I replaced plugs, wires, rotor, cap and coil. She seems to be much happier now. Best of all no stumbles.
Re: THE NEVER ENDING PROBLEM HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (jaa1988)
I have to check the ground wire, where can you find one? I can't find one in any magazine like Mid america, ecklers etc. I just gave it a tune up less then 700 miles ago, new distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires(wires were from my brothers car that had less then 1K miles on them if that.) If its not any of the wires what else could it possible be? Im gonna try and replace the ground wire and the HEI coil anything else I should replace? The car has 62200 miles on it.
