Default Dual and Single Mass flywheel

R94LT1 is at work, but asked me to post what the good and bad of each of these are. He needs a new one, and GM wants $700!

I'm debating the same choice while waiting to get my Clutch done.

Dual-Mass (requires unsprung clutch)
Pros: - Stock choice from factory.
- Larger rotating mass (easier to get going at lower speeds)
Cons: - Expensive ($$$)
- Heavy and wastes HP spinning flywheel.

Single Mass (requires sprung clutch)
Pros: - Light weight (more HP to wheels)
- Cheaper than dual mass ($150-$200)
Cons: - Noisy while clutch is out and in neutral (sounds like broken tranny)
- little more difficult to get car moving from start

If you can live with the noise get the single mass, if your concerned about looking good sitting at the lights consider the dual-mass.

It does not take more HP to spin a heavy flywheel. It is a stored energy device. The flywheel's effect on crank/motor acceleration and deceleration occurs primarily when the car is in neutral or the clutch is depressed.

If it were me, i could careless about the noise :). Oh yeah, i have no cats and no mufflers, i guess that would be assumed, haha. And 1.6 roller rockers are pretty darn loud too, so there some more noise. :D

As for me, Flexplates are cheap :D

You are correct, there is no change in HP for your car but a lighter flywheel will let your Vette accelerate faster then with a heavy one. (Slightly faster 1/4 mile)

Happy with the SMF set up-- Camaro Flywheel/Mcleod clutch in my 396. Noise is not an issue at all. $450 for the complete set up is alot better than $700 for just the flywheel. You need to watch your tach though. 6000RPM's comes real fast in a stroker with the SMF. :D

Are you running the single or dual disc clutch now? $450 is much lower than the total package I was quoted. (dual disc, steel flywheel, pressure plate, TOB)

BTW, thanks to Glock'94 for getting this up before I could get online.

When I did mine I wound up cutting the dual mass, even though this is supposed to be a no no. It only had minor burns and .006 cleaned it up.

I was scared away from all the horror stories I read of people having vibration, fit, engage, disingage, and noise problems. Seemed like 50% of those who converted had some sort of issue which caused them at worse to pull out the tranny again.

I didn't want to spend the $700 so I took a chance and cut the old one. It is holding up fine.

Just keep in mind, the stock LT1 rotating assembly is externally balanced. A single mass nuetral balanced wheel will likely have vibration issues.

Oh, I am glad you mentioned your 1.6 RR are noisy. Mine are too and I was ready to pull the covers and try adjusting them again. The engine runs fine but they are louder than the stock RR's. I was thinking the rollers would be quieter!

Mines WAY beyond even trying to do anything with it.
It won't be going into a stock LT-1 car. Getting a 383 stroker as well. Not sure on the balance though. Have to check that one.

The discounted Camaro flywheel is around $150.00 and the street/strip clutch is $300 as I remember.
