Hey everyone I just bought a 1990 6 speed with 150,000 miles and am wondering how many miles will they go without service
The last owner told me that the throw out bearing is beginning to make some noise.
I will have to deal with that, so should I give the transmission any attention while its out?
Thanks as always, Rick
Every other year change the trans oil either BMW or GM fluid have worked well for me. Remove the fill plug before the drain plug. 17mm flat grind hex tool only.
If you have the dual mass flywheel still in and it has some wear left on it keep it.
Do not let the shop resurface the flywheel. They can't do it right I don't care what they say or promise. And when they screw it up you will not find a replacement.
As far as long life goes, IMHO you've got another 50k miles as a best guess never having seen your car or know nothing about how it was driven or will be driven. So there's my guess. Watch the oil pressure. When it starts to drop low at warm idle that's the time to think about rebuild.

Personally? when mine was out I replaced the rear seal and the tailshaft housing bushing. Easy and cheap; got the "heavy duty" tailshaft bushing from ZFdoc; the rear seal is an over the counter part at any auto parts store (hint: chevy turbo 400);
inspect the webbing where the C beam attaches for cracking or elongated holes; same for the C beam;
since the drive shaft is accessible, replace the u joints, now rather than later.
