Default Flushing brake lines

Installing a new Master Cylinder in a 92 vette, when I took the reservoir off the MC it had lots of black gump in it. I cleaned the reservoir out good but now, before I install my new MC what is the best method to flush out the lines to insure that none of that gunk is plugging up the lines?

By a quart of cheap brake fluid from Track, PepBoys, etc. and bleed each line until they run clean. Do NOT flush with anything containing mineral spirits, or alcohol.

Cool, thanks guys, I thought about that ABS system, I was looking at a diagram of where all the lines are and how they are ran in one of my maintenance books and I noticed them all going through that system, I just hope they are not plugged in it anywhere. I think that is a good idea on the cheap break fluid to try and bleed all the lines clean first, then go back with good stuff.

Just like any other vehicle...get a quart of brake fluid and bleed each line until they run clean...RR,LR, RF, LF.

You'll need to connect a TECH II (GM Computer tool) to properly cycle the ABS body to flush it out.

One other spot to bleed would be on the ABS body itself. It's almost the high point in the system (except for the Master Cylinder). I understand that some early ABS units don't have a bleeder, I don't know when it started.

Somebody told me to use LR,RR, LF,RF if you are using a vacuum pump instead of brake pressure  Any comments on that? :chevy

I believe this is different because of the ABS.

I don't know if it is because of the ABS but the sequence for '91 (and probably '92 too) is RF, RR, LR, LF.

My 96 FSM says to do it this way. As for the ABS unit, it is cycled on every start up cycle. Flush your brakes every few months until everything is clean, your ABS pump will have clean fluid too. Then be sure to flush every 1-2 years, it's just as important as changing your motor's oil. Check out the price for a new ABS pump

When you bleed brakes, you always bleed the longest line first and the shortest line last. Since the ABS unit is in the back, that means that the RF has the longest line and the LR the shortest. The correct bleed order is RF, LF, RR, LR. I have not bled my ABS so I don't know if it should be done first or last in the sequence.

kkonen: The correct bleed order is RF, LF, RR, LR

It says in the GM '91 Vette service manual that the correct sequence is RF, RR, LR, LF if you are bleeding manually ie. the old way.

And if you are bleeding with pressurised system the sequence is the same RF, RR, LR, LF.

Don't know if this differs between years??

OOPs, I have my 1996 FSM open to page 5-12, second column, it says to bleed RR, LR, RF, LF. I did it this way, using SUPER BLUE yellow fluild to replace the blue stuff. It takes a long time to clear the RR, the LF is cleared within 5-6 pumps. And when I look to page 5E2-100 second column, under autobleed procedure (bleeding the ABS pump), it has the same sequence.

If you flush your fluid once a year, I bet it doesn't really matter what sequence you use, the fluid will be fresh.

WOW, lots of opinions on sequence

Here is what worked for me, may have been wrong but it worked.

First time: Removed old fluid from Master Cyl, refilled with Wilwood 570 and bled like heck until clear at all wheels. Worked farthest from the MC to closest (didn't think/know about ABS unit) Seq = RR,LR,RF,LF

Couple of days later...skunky fluid again?? fluid from the ABS unit, probably.
I know Bill, the beer in the Garage 'frig was skunky too!

Second time: Same thing but used LR, RR, LF, RF sequence.

6 pints of fluid later(total for both days) I got clear fluid, no runs, no drips, no errors
