I have been asked if i could convert a friends 4+3 to a 6speed. I found the ecklers kit which contains everything needed for the conversion. Has anybody had this done to there car? I need to get an idea of what a fair labor charge should be. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to know what's involved with this swap too.
The main thing I'm curious about is the shifter. I'm assuming the Richmond uses a different one. Does it bolt in place of the original or are some trans tunnel mods required?
sdixon: you're not the CART driver Scott Dixon are you?
The richmond 6-speed you see in Ecklers is the one designed by richmond to be a direct swap over from the 4+3. It has a custom tailshaft to bolt right up to our torque arm, and a special shifter. I think there may be some self-fabrication involved, but I am unsure of what.
I'm thinking of going to a richmond if I break too many more 4+3 parts. :D
I've done the swap. Very straight forward. Ecklers has everything you need except ONE item: you need to fab an aluminum shield to cover the spot in the tranny tunnel where the stock shifter bolts up. Richmond's shifter traditionally bolts to the tranny. Gears are heavy duty designed with less 'angle' so expect a little gear hum.
