Default Opti oil leak, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1994 opti seal leaking . Changed the seal 3 times and it is getting worse. Went for smog check today. Did not pass, Oil was all over the ground.
Changed the PCV.
Opti is MSD vented.
What am I missing?
Have changed the seal in the past with no problem but now cannot make a seal.
last 3 times I have used the Felpro seal.
Not sure what other brands there are.
Help please!!!
Thanks in advance.

How exactly are you installing the seal?

are you being careful not to nick the seal with the opti driveshaft when installing? i normally get a light film of oil around the seal when i install it and haven't had a leak.

Are you torquing it to factory specs or just hand tightening it? This is important for gaskets.

I am careful not to nick it.
I use just a bit of grease to lube it.
Like I said I have installed in the past with no problem, but the last three times nothing but leaks.
I've been using the felpro kits and I'm starting to think maybe I used something else in the past.
Maybe there's different seals???

Try not using grease.

Stupid question here, but its tough (for me anyway) to see behind the waterpump and opti: are you sure it's the opti seal and not the water pump seal? I thought the water pump seal was much more challenging than the opti to get right when I did mine.

I have been in there MANY times, don't know how many Opti's I have been through. Currently using MSD. I though it had a good seal but if it even smells water the motor will start stumbling,....POS! Good news is I can just spray some WD-40 and it's all good again. Before I knew how to install the WP seal properly I just put it in incorrectly and never did have a leak there. I had a leak @ the crank hub after replacing the seal there and found out there needs to be a sleeve installed as the old seal created a groove. So Ya I can't see where the leak is now but the last 2 times the Opti seal was the culprit. Tomorrow I get it back apart.
Thanks everyone for you contributions, I really appreciate them.

The opti seal is extremely easy to fold over and it will leak every time if it's not installed right. Search YouTube for opti seal install tool. I use a size 3/8 1/4 drive socket. I grind the 1/4 inch ratchet size down like a cone. Make sure it's extremely smooth. Also make sure the 3/8 size fits over the opti shift and buts up to the race the seal rides on smoothly. Grease the tool and opti seal up and install the seal carefully. It works every time. Search YouTube tho. There is a video that shows how to do it. Sorry I'm so breif. Headed into work. Good luck

You're talking about the water pump seal. I did that one a similar way, except I used a 10mm 3/8 drive snap on socket and slid the seal over to a deep well socket to get over the splined shaft

When you get the pump and opti off snap a photo and post it, never hurts to have more eyes on it

OK everybody, I'm feeling a bit foolish, turns out it was the WP seal that has been leaking!!!
So changed it and put back together and NO start!!
The MSD Opti has splines like the others but they just fill in between
2 splines to create the double spline, well somehow I knocked half that filler out and am having a real hard time getting it in correctly.
Prayers needed!!!

get yourself an inspection mirror, see where the spot is in the cam for it. and rotate the opti shaft to match it.

I did the mirror trick but still managed to put it in wrong.
I was able to get some solder to stick in the spline and I got it in right!!!
thank god.
Any way thanks everyone for the input.
