The 85 came stock with both mufflers with only one of the two outlets operative. The other side was blocked off so only one worked.
If the drives side has both side operative....than it has to have been replaced at one point in time. I replaced my originals with mufflers that looked exactly like the stock originals but both outlets work.
A friend of mine took a long screwdriver and punched a hole in the non-functional side.
I have Walker Dynomax mufflers on my car. Both tips are functional and the stainless steel tips polished up real nice. They claim they're exactly the same internally as the stock mufflers, but they are definitely louder with both tips working.
Any aftermarket muffler should have both tips fully functional.
with Cliff Harris the Walker mufflers have both tips working, look good and are a little louder. You can check some of the online catalogs such as Mid-America and they list exact replica mufflers with both tips working. Helps the car breath which is a issue with the 85.
On my 85 I went to a front "Y" that was 2-1/2" tube then going into the Magniflow cat and then a standard rear "Y" with the stock looking mufflers with both tips functional. The car breathed much better. For the 1/4 mile drags, I would pull the cat and replace it with a straight thru pipe I built and the above mention rear "Y" and mufflers and cut .5 seconds off my time.
