i have an 87 vette,
should I have the shop do this or can I control the mess in the garage?
just curious if this is one of those small jobs that is better done by a shop.
You can control it, but have a couple of rags and maybe a small tupperwear container handy anyways.
You'll want to depressurize the fuel system first. Get the car up on the ramps or however you want it raised. Take the gas cap off. Now pull the fuel pump fuse. Start the car and let it run until it stalls from gas starvation. Try to start it again. Does it run? If so let it run till it dies. Once the car won't start, crank the engine over a good 15 seconds further to make sure you suck out all that is possible. :)
Now get under the car and remove the aluminum heat shield right under the fuel filter and get to work. Don't lay DIRECTLY under it when you disconnect the lines as you probably will get SOME gas to come out. Put a few rags or a towel you don't care for under it. :)
Easy to do - Scorp gave you the low down - I did it two days ago and it took me about 10-15 minutes. Be sure to check the o-rings- they will be attached to the incoming and outgoing fuel lines. You have to purchase the o-rings separately- they dont come with the fuel filter (they only cost 50 cents each and all parts stores carry them).
