Default DTC P1416 need advice

so I know this has to do with The AIR system and I checked out the fsm diagnostic tests. Problem is I dont have a scanner to monitor it. I checked all the vacuum lines and didnt notice any problems. I guess I can just change the check valves and hope that does it. Anybody have any advice on where to look without having a scanner to do it properly? I also found a 1074 which is a lean fuel problem but many of the diagnostic steps for this indicate possible vacuum problems which leads me to think maybe the 2 codes are being tripped by a similar fault. any advice?

First thing I would do is clear the code and see if it occurs again. Many times a unique set of circumstances will set a code when there is no persistent problem present.

You can clear the codes by disconnecting your neg. battery terminal, of course you'll have to reset everything.

Code readers are pretty cheap for the basic reader. It will show the code and erase the DTC. under $50 for the simple ones.

Also, it is not uncommon for a random code once in a while. Of course if it keeps coming up, there is an issue.

1416 is an OEM specific code. From what I can find it relates to the secondary air pump system, emissions.

I believe you can clear the codes yourself using the buttons on the cluster. You'd need to consult the FSM or do a search to find out the method. I don't know how it's done on the later cars.

Here's a site with info on the P1416 DTC:

yes, I do know that you can read and clear codes using the info center buttons. I did figure that out and its pretty cool. The fsm is saying to hook a scanner up and monitor the system in open or closed loop. I guess I dont understand this part. It sounds like you can use a scanner for more than reading codes. You can actually monitor and test your car with one. Does this require a more expensive scanner?

Well, yes. While the cheap ones only read and clear codes, the top of the line models, i.e. TechII scanners used by dealerships will read everything that is happening in the engine in real time. Those however are rather expensive.
