the kit was pretty crappy from the git-go as I understand it.
I would hold off and here is why: The 4+3 is a dubious box in the first place. It will break. When it does, get one of the direct fit 5sp conversions from Liberty (TKO, basically) and go from there.

I had the short shift years ago and liked it. You MUST re-align your linkage after the install (not that hard). It was an improvement over the stock shifting, still not a Hurst, or ZF/T56 but better. I agree the 4+3 trans is an "issue" waiting to happen but I enjoyed mine for years (with the short shift) before the OD became an problem.

Any update on the availability of the short shift?
I have a kit, in my tool box, never installed. I'll have to dig it up. I recently had a Tremec TKO600 installed in my '84, so if anyone wants it PM me and I can drop it in the mail. Continental US only
The short shift arms work very well if you adjust your linkage afterwards. One of the first mods I did years ago. The stocker with it's long throws shifted like a truck.
years ago a friend of mine wanted to install a short shift before they were available, he replaced the 1-2 & 3-4 shift levers with the shorter reverse lever, and if memory serves me after getting shifter gates all lined up to his liking he loved it
