Default No reverse 84 auto- overfilled

Hope you can help. I have an 84 automatic that was shifting fine. I was trying to stop a leak and added a 8 oz bottle of stop leak to a full transmission. Almost immediately I lost reverse. Still have all forward gears. I tried removing a quart of fluid but still no reverse. Will draining all of the fluid out and refilling get reverse back? Thanks

Most likely no, I've seen a lot of overfilled trannys that function ok. Where's it leaking from? Converter area?

There's small leaks in all of the gaskets and seals, nothing big just makes a mess in the garage.

Do you think adding a transmission cleaner and doing a fluid/filter change would help?

if it isn't just a coincidence, and you lost the reverse becouse of a mechanical issue,i would try a fluid flush/cleaner...Now you'r stucked with no reverse, next step is a rebuild ,"extrema ratio" try the clener/flushing way...good luck bro

From what I've recently learned in my resent trans rebuild (besides dropping a trans in the driveway sucks), I'd say the reverse input drum probably needs to be replaced. AKA, rebuild time.

Seafoam makes a trans additive/cleaner. I'd try that and replace the fluid and filter. For about $50 and a hour or so of your time, I'd say it's worth a shot...I just wouldn't be hopeful.

It probably won't get reverse back.

I would drop the pan and replace the filter. That will give you the opportunity to look at the magnet in the pan and see what's stuck to it. Open up the filter and see what's inside. Doing those things will give you a much better idea of the condition of your trans and help you decide what to do afterwards.
