I'm trying to remove the ignition cylinder from the steering column to check the wires. So far I've got the steering column lowered beneath the trim and I don't see how I can get inside the column to pop out the cylinder. Any help from anyone who has done this will be appeciated. Thanks.
Sorry I can't help you on this. I replaced the one in my 89 and it required removal of the steering wheel. With an airbag that's a different deal. What wires are you trying to check? The VATS wires? The ignition tumbler pushes a rod if I remember right to a swith located under the drivers kick panel. What's the problem you are having in that you need to check the wires?
89vette is right.. the 93 column is the same basically. Of course there are added wires for the AIR Bag, but all ignition switch related wires (except VATS) do not travel up the column. They are connected on the lower portion of the Column behind the hush panel. A GM/HELMS service manual would be a tremendous help to you
Jeff is spot on. Get a service manual. You will be 90% wired for the job. The 10% remaining will be specific questions on technique. You will also need a steering wheel puller and compression tool. All available for under $20 total. You have to remove steering wheel, air bag, retaining clip, turn signal cancel devices, emergency flasher(?), and couple of other items. The service manual has pretty good instructions and excellent diagrams.
I replaced the switch on my '96. I disabled the airbags, removed steering wheel. Lower steering wheel column by dropping dropping the bolts under it. When the wheel drops, you can see the ignition switch on the top of the steering column. There are two screws holding it in. remove the two screws and the switch is out. The manual says remove the steering wheel from the car, but this is not necessary.
I did not mess with the cylinder; so I cannot help you there. By the way, I replaced my switch because it was cheap too see if that was the problem. It was not the problem, so that was a lot of work for nothing.
