Are any of you running with a stock computer, and a hot cam kit...???? I already got my kit in, but I can't idle, and I'll be looking towards the Computer if a new IAC doesn't fix it ... so my question is, can it work with a stock chip? does anyone have their car Running with that set up right now, or previosly? Thanks...
Re: will stock chip work with the hot cam? (R Cook 92)
The hotcam will not idle properly at the 600RPM your a stock LT1 programming is set at. It will want to stall.
You will need a custom chip to do this. I got mine from Ed Wright (fastchips.com) It's $350 bucks.
I assume you also went with the 1.6 roller rockers and upgraded springs. This valve train can rev higher. My new chip bumped up the rev limiter from 5800 to 6500rpm. Plus fans turn on sooner, all the little stuff I guess. Anyway it works.
Marcho Polo here on the board as a good rep burning chips.

Well, I got it to idle somewhat with the new IAC... but you're right it surges and jumps alot... and I haven't got it in a gear yet, so that should be a surprise!!!
So is the ED Wright chip the best as far as price vs. quality/precision.... ??? what are my options here?
Re: will stock chip work with the hot cam? (R Cook 92)
Ed Wright has done so many for the forum that he has a great reputation for chips. I would go to http://www.fastchip.com and get his number. I know $350 is high, but the new chip is good and so is the service.

Well, took it for it's first drive, and it seems to idle really well. I will say it could be better, but that in no way means that it is not driveable, and tolerateable as it sits now. The AC seems to work good and not affect the idle, it needs a charge, but the blower and all that stuff work, so I was OK there,I guess I'll see what else happens, I'm only shiftng out of gear at WOT at approx 4300 rpm...???? I do have a new transmission, so I'm sure the cables need a better adjustment. I thought the cables controlled the shifts...??? or does the computer tell it when to shift on a 92? either way I am only shifting at 4300!!!! this is no fun! Any ideas?
Re: will stock chip work with the hot cam? (R Cook 92)
You really need a chip to get it to work correctly. You have speed density which will not be able to compensate for the extra airflow in the upper rpm range. Be careful how high you run the motor. The stock LT1 rods aren't going to take runs above 6000 - 6100 without spinning the bearings or worse. LT4 motors have specially machined crankshaft, larger balancer and powdered metal rods.
Re: will stock chip work with the hot cam? (R Cook 92)
Any time you change the cam the computer will have to re-learn. Most 6-spds can handle it and actually run very well with the stock computer, they just have the rev limiter set too low. With the auto you might need to kick up the RPM's a little, possibly a higher stall converter?
Anyway, give the car a chance to learn the cam and you'd be suprised how well it will do.

I've driven it for approx 50 miles... and I do have a 2200 stall in the new transmission. It idles right around 600-700, but its jumpy...I can't decide if the jumping os the cam, or or idle problems... more tinkering required... still trying to figure out all the TV cable adjustments for the new tranny...???

Yeah ... stock programming will work, but definitely not well. I could barely keep my car alive at lights on the way home from the shop. Needs some computer work to help it.
