Default Re: Oil Cooler? (rbvette1)

There is a adapter mounted between the block and the oil filter. Inside this adapter are plates. The oil runs through the plates and coolant runs through the plates. The idea is that the heat from the oil will transfer to the coolant. The oil and coolant obviously never mix it up, they each stay in their own plates. These coolers have often been referred to as oil warmers because they are rather limited in their ability to cool the oil. Most anybody that runs their cars hard will put in an external oil cooler, very similar to a the engines radiator, but smaller. Here is a picture of my oil cooler. I can run hard laps up at Brainerd and my oil will only get to about 200-210 degrees on a warm day. I had an oil warmer and saw 325 degree oil temps. Very bad.

Its just a waste of material if you ask me, the stock oil cooler doesnt really do much for you. I dont think the stocker does a great job when you race either.

Now if you do race, it would be a good idea to add a real cooler that actually cools the oil down some like he did above.
