Default Trans problems maybe?

I have a 1995 LT1 today when I started it I thought I might have heard a crackling noise that could have been the driver side cat but not sure radio was on. Later I was getting on the throttle a little bit on the entrance ramp and when it got to 5500 rpm it seemed to shut down and make a crackling noise like a box of rocks. I drove normal about 20 miles to get home and it shifted normal. Once I got closer to home I floored it to see if I could duplicate and it did it again. My thought were either the factory trans is toast, the cats ( but could they make your car respond so) or it may be the fly wheel. Oh the car is an auto just FYI. Thoughts? I don't want to take it to a shop and get a trans rebuild only to find out it was the darn cat!

Thank You

Checking the cats to see if they are breaking apart isn't a hard task. Just pull down the exhaust. The driver side cat bolts to the rest of the exhaust, and the passenger side is a slip fit. Just drop it from the behind the cats and look in there with a flashlight. You'll be able to tell if they're breaking apart. Also stand behind the car when it's running you might some some of the material coming out, looks like glitter.

I'm thinking cats because you don't mention any symptoms of a trans slipping, or any driveability issues, other than the hard acceleration. Which could very well be the cats restricting exhaust flow. Also it is not too uncommon for the cats to burn up after an engine build if the A/F ratios are off. As I understand it.

It ended up being none of the mentioned problems. I got a tank of bad gas! Filled up in a pinch last at a station I later learned with a bad history of selling 87 instead of 93. And what I was hearing was valve knock. Drained the tank and put good gas in from my regular station and the car ran like a top. Just to let everyone know if they experience the same problem.
