I have a 84. My dash light sometime are dim. When I start the car they are nice and bright and then the dim. When I shine a light in the auto darkening cell it get bright and when I hold my hand over it it get darker.
I just think sometimes its to dim and sometimes its good.
I am wondering if it could be my ignition switch? Or is the normal?
thanks for any input
it is hard to tell on here how dim they are getting. but from what you said it seems normal. They are changing when you mess with the photo cell. Do you have anyone that you can compair it to?
I can not get the video to work. If any one can tell me how it would be great. It show what I am talking about very good.
I took the video on my Iphone and sent it to my email. I could not get it to load. windows media player would not play it and quick time messed up my computer.
Try turning the headlight switch to the left and right. It should control the brightness of the dash lights.
That only works at night when the parking or headlights are on. The photocell overrides that input.
The dash back lighting is much dimmer at night because you don't need much light to see the instrument panel. The photocell does nothing at night and the brightness is controlled by the rheostat on the headlight switch.
During the daytime, the photocell controls the back lighting.
You might want to take out the instrument cluster and look at the solder connections between the two PC boards. It's fairly common for the connector pins to get hot and cause the solder to crystalize -- bad connection.
