Door hinge spring, how hard to change?...

Door hinge spring, how hard to change?...
Opened the driver's side door on my 89 this morning and heard this "pop" and metal hitting the ground. Picked up the metal piece and found out it was the top hinge spring. The door works fine but it will not stay open or lock into place when open. Does the door need to come off to replace this? If not what's the easiest way to replace this? Thanks.

Just changed drivers spring on my 87 coupe. Very simple and you don't need the special tool they sell. I got it from mid America for about ten bucks.

corvette0096, you do not have to buy the whole thing. Look in MidAmerica or Eckler's, they sell the spring for like $10 and it is easy to install.

Spring is on the way. Thanks for the help. After looking closer with the hood up looks pretty easy.

i just replaced all my door hinges(must repaint). i bought them from gm for like $25.00 each...including the spring that fell out of yours. very easy to change if your car is apart but if it is not the spring replacement is best. if you could move the door up & down (holding it on the bottom) your hinges are shot.good luck! :cheers:

Took less than 5 minutes and only needed a screwdriver. Thanks to all for your help. Hinges are good by the way. :seeya
