Default Range indicator

Well it appears my range has been substantially shortened, since the first digit is missing!

Anyone got an idea why this is occurring? All light segments light up when I turn the key. Also noticed that my lights do not dim either from the dimmer switch or when the lights are turned on.

Reset the average/ instant mpg reset switch below the selector, if it does not show full with a full tank you will need to remove the sender/fuel pump assembly from the tank. the sender may have been bent out of shape or is catching on something.

Best way to check if it is your instrument cluster or fuel sender, turn ignition on and it does a self test show all bars and digits.
If the top digit does not light that will be something other than the fuel sender.

The dash brightness is governed by the photocell in the dash, the top left of dash that is what the hole is for. The brightness can also be adjusted with the light switch, turn **** to left to increase brightness at max it will turn the interior light on. Turning the lights on overrides the photocell i believe.

One of the best things to do when you buy a vette is get the shop manual, so you can diagnose and fix any issues that pop up rather than throwing parts at it

Thanks gerardvg. I do get all light segments when the ignition is turned on. I recently disconnected the battery which probably reset my average and thus causes the low range number. It didn't dawn on me that the range was calculated by the average. I just looked at the tank level and seeing a range of 40 didn't make sense.

Thanks for explaining the lights/photocell. I was trying to dim while in the garage with the lights on. I will try it with the lights out and see if that works. Appreciate the help.

You can also check the Photocell works by shining a flashlight at the sensor, the lights will go dim to the point of hot being able to see much. Or on a sunny day put your finger over the photocell, that will
vary the display brightness.

The headlight **** should be turned to change the brightness to suit you, anticlockwise to increase brightness and closkwise to decrease.

To get a full tank to show, you will need to remove the fuel sender from the tank and check it has not been catching on anything.
You may have to open the sender box and adjust the tension on the bit the-sweeps across the loops of wire, should not be Loose should be able to hear it as you move the sender float.

Cheers
