Default 84 C4 Odometer After LCD Replacement

I have replaced my LCD display with a full refurbished panel last fall. It was then I found that due to the transmission having been swapped, there was not a functional/compatible speed sensor, so no signal was being sent for some time. No odometer, milegage, speed, etc. The seller adjusted the odometer reading to be very close to what was in the crapped out display..and the panel is beautiful except for the Odometer.

I have read posts about the mileage is contained in the CCM and this may be the issue. Would a mismatch between the CCM and the odometer setting or swapping out the LCD Planel with the odometer cause the odometer not to function at all?If so, how do I work around this?

Any advice would be appreciated.

The ECM has no clue what the car's odometer reading is on an 84. The mileage is strictly kept in the instrument panel readout..

An '84 has no CCM and I'd believe you have an issue with the motor that drives the odometer in your cluster. There are tutorials for replacement and troubleshooting also.

Your speedometer works fine just no odometer? You mention no VSS but you don't mention speedometer was actually corrected. I'm assuming you corrected that aspect of it because you mention "beautiful"! Motor could be fine also and it be an odometer problem also.

The VSS and Speedometer are fine...just no odometer. I had to change the transmission back to one with a compatible VSS to get any distance related input to the panel. As there the other response reinforced my believe that there was no CCM feedback to what the odometer should be reading, I will hope it is the odometer's stepping motor connection. Love pulling that LCD panel out as there is so much dash disassemby that goes with it. I guess it will give me a chance to try and reach my clutch safety switch that has gone bad and I have jumpered closed now so I can start the car.

Thanks guys. Stay tuned!

Hi

The odometer is completely seperate from the instrument cluster, there is a pair of wires from the instrument cluster to the odometer or odometer to instrument cluster. Check the plug has not come off, you will need to remove the instrument cluster to get to it.

Tip remove the dash pad first and the instrument cluster will come out a lot easier.

The odometer may have stopped working, you will have to locate the odometer assembly from a wrecking yard or ebay.

Here's a nice picture of the odometer stepper motor and the connection to the dash cluster:

There are a bunch of odometers for sale on ebay.. If yours is bad, just find one with close to the same mileage as your car... I'm not sure if the 84 is the same as later years but it looks like 84 -88 are a match.....WW

The odometers are available BUT the motors are not, it's a needle in a haystack to find them, you can contact Batee.com he may have a working used one that will work for you!!

I have mine removed but was wondering how to test it to see if it was bad. I would hate to fry a good stepper motor by applying too much juice as I tap/pulse the leads. Otherwise I will have to go and get a used one. I would assume the motors are about the same with the LCD dsplay

If you use the original '84 odometer I believe it has to be an '84 motor BUT if you use a later odometer you need to use yet a different one.

I would check with Bryan before I did a thing. I'd have a conversation with him just to confirm the "check out" procedure also.
