You are correct if it is factory set up and it sounds like it is then it is a BIG cat not a muffler. If a dual exhaust is wanted with the stock manifold or with long tube headers which I STRONGLY recommend. TPIS sells a set that will go on without having to pull the motor or clear the firewall to access at least 1 bolt on each side maybe 2 but definitely 1 bolt. Anyway take it to a good muffler shop buddy they can bend the pipe for you and it won't cost an arm and a leg. The long tube headers are $900 and worth every penny. If you go this route you will need 2 cats and Magnaflow makes a good cat with the emissions stuff. I bought mine from Summit. Best prices brand new. Mufflers are an individual choice. I went with Flowmaster 44 but some guys hate them. Again check out Summit for best prices. If you want true dual exhaust ditch the current exhaust system at least from the manifold back and stagger the cats where that big cat was and it will fit fine.

if you don't see two mufflers , then you probably just have the cat and muffller eliminators....I installed an x pipe with two 'cherry bombs' right out of the x.....it's a great sound....

Another option would be to find a take off system from an LT1 car, it is a dual system, though some argue because of the resonator it isn't true duals. It is however fairly free flowing and uses 2.75" pipes, althought where the system goes into the resonator it necks down to 2.5", but does go back to 2.75 after resonator. Best of all, you can find these systems for less than $100. The only thing you will need is to take to muffler shop to connect to your manifolds, or headers if you chose that route.

You have to expect a lot of drone when driving around with sports mufflers, when i had the standard mufflers wear out i got some straight thru type mufflers. Well everyone always said the corvette sounds great, but that is not what it is like driving at any steady speed just constand DRONE !!!
Well i think after 6 months of loud drone inside the cabin, at just the slightest touch of the gas pedal. Its there always and i searched around for the standard mufflers, after that and am very happy to be able to people talking when i am driving the vette.

Maybe i am getting too old to drive a Corvette.
