Best octane boost is no octane boost. They will not effectively raise the octane rating enough to help.

yep. BUT, i've read some research stuff and "NOS" brand raises it the most. Usually about 7/10th of an octane. Best way is to mix some race gas in there.

Yeah, somebody did a genuine study a while back and it turned out that only the NOS brand produced any measurable effect until they started adding four times the recommended volume (four bottles in a 20-gallon tank).

Look for race gas. That's what I'm doing right now. It's hard to find, but I think it's worth it. 100-gallon unleaded is available retail, and Sunoco makes a 104-octane 'super unleaded' that is rated 'for off-road use only'. I havent' found any of the Sunoco yet, but I'm homing in on a retailer for 100-octane.

Don't look for AvGas, and don't start dumping raw toluene into your tank, no matter what the local crowd is doing.

Doesn't that stuff also mess up the O2 sensors?

Do some searches on the net for octane boost methods to mix your own. Toluene and xylene (I think) will work. You'll be mixing in ratios of 30% to get really high octane. MTBE is also an option but its probably going away since its toxic to groung water.

Don't forget to add a teaspoon or two because these products have no lubricants-------but they are the best quick fix you will find for extra octane quick.

At somewhere around 20-25% (as memory servers, and it doesn't nearly often enough) the toluene/xylene will cause a loss of power. They don't have anywhere near the thermal energy of gasoline. It's at the point where the amount of advance without detonation is maxed. Beyond that point less power is generated. It depends a lot on the car.

It's a good way to see quickly if you really need higher octane.

Toluene and Xylene are both pretty toxic by themselves. Don't mess with them.

Most unleaded racing fuel is 100 octane. Sunoco makes a 104-octane superunleaded that is marked as "off-road use only".

Don't even think about using the 110-octane or 118-octane leaded fuels unless you want to trash your cats and O2 sensors. Unless you've already done a carb conversion and abandoned EFI...

100-octane racing fuel is clear-colored by general convention.

This site has good advice and good dilution charts.

also, look at 76 and Sunoco web sites. the 76 site also has dilution charts. Our engines aren't boosted and aren't very-high-compression, so there's a point where you don't get any further benefit from higher octane, which means you keep trying different 100/93 mixes until you're not getting any more improvement. It's sure cheaper than 100% racing fuel or little bottles of booster.

Has anyone ever heard of a product called Liquid Horsepower? I have a friend who just bought a 67 chevelle SS with a 396 in it. Anyways, the machine shop that had rebuilt the motor highly recomnended it.
