i've been chasing this a long time. sure would appreciate a steer or two.
1996 base coupe, no modifications.
after getting the engine good and hot, shutting down, then restarting while hot, i get "service asr/asr off" lights. if i wait for a half hour or so before restarting, the lights remain off. the asr functions normally and can be controlled by the "asr" switch as long as the lights are off. this is definitely a heat-related issue.
i've flushed and refilled the brake reservoir to the brim, replaced the throttle position sensor, removed and cleaned the rear antilock brake sensors, re-bled the brakes, checked throttle cable tensior and even replaced the ecm. the car acts as if it fails an asr test when it is hot.
this is the last thing to fix on my '96. can anyone help?
thanks for your reply, toptechx6. my car is a '96 (obd2). i have a scanner which never shows a code, either current or in history, after an asr fail event. as far as i know, the asr can activate by doing or or more of three things. 1-apply rear brake, 2-physically relax the throttle and 3-retard the timing. i think i've attended to these three things. looking for ANY place to start troubleshooting.

Note that most consumer grade OBDII scan tools will NOT display ABS codes, make sure yours is one that will before you say there are none in memory. I have not pulled codes from a 96 using the digital dash display, but the tutorial indicates you can do that, I would at least give it a try.
thanks to both pianoguy and toptechx6 for their replies. i have a couple of leads now to work with. wouldn't an abs problem present itself with abs-related lights on the dic? i've never had the first hint of an abs problem, and the system works normally. i'll let you know if i can find a solution to the asr lights.
