When i accelerate from a stop, i hear a slight click seemingly from the center of the car. My guess was the driveshaft u joints. I havnt changed them but i did change the halfshaft u joints recently. Any ideas what it may be????????
Re: Clickign noise > u Joints?? Driveshaft? (5abivt)
 Funny thing...... I posted this exact question when I got my car a few weeks back. I was told to check for everything, rusty spindles, weak U joints, etc. I asked the Corvette dealer from which I bought it and he told me that it was the torque washers, or the like, in the rear. They absorb just enough of the torque to make your U joints and half shaft last longer. He said without them, you'd be replacing U joints often. He said it was a dealer item, not aftermarket, and that the clicking was normal. That was a few weeks an ALOT of HARD takeoffs ago, no change, still there. But fortunately, so is my rear! Not sure if it's the truth or not, but just wanted to share. Hope this helps. :seeya

Funny thing was it only started 200 miles ago, when i brought it out of storage last year. Seems like its coming out of the tranny end of the driveshaft. Im going to change the u joints in the driveshaft and if it aint it, im gonna get its something to do with the tranny that attaches to the driveshaft. Ill keep ya posted.

Re: Clickign noise > u Joints?? Driveshaft?
ujoints. This is exactly what mine was doing, although the clicking was coming from the driver's side. Went ahead and changed all 4 on the halfshafts, and the mechanic said the drivers side outer was definitely gone. Clicking is gone too. For those of you that have been told this is normal, it is NOT. Also you can drive it this way for quite a while (I think I went about 3000 miles on mine), but it's really not something you want to fail while driving.

i also dont believe this is normal. A while back i had a clickign noice that occured when i acelerated, all the time. it was the halfshafts, i changed the u joints there and voila! the click was gone. Now, the click only happens sometimes when i leave a stop, thats it. Thats why i was wondering if it might be something else. I think its the u joints in the drive shaft. :blueangel:

I have also had a "clicking" in my rear suspension. It seems to be coming from the sides of the car, in the rear, in the wheel area. I convinced myself that the halfshaft U joints were about to fall out. I changed them...no change in the noise. I have yet to prove it, but I'm willing to bet that the "click" is the result of "play" (slop) between the outer yoke shaft and the internal spline of the wheel bearing. The bearings, themselves, are tight, but I just know there is slop between the splines. If I am right, the only way to fix it, correctly, is to replace BOTH the yoke shaft AND the wheel bearing. Driveline "clicks" can come from anywhere, and U joints should be a prime suspect, But don't neglect to look here, if you have trouble finding yours. Good luck.
Re: Clickign noise > u Joints?? Driveshaft? (5abivt)
Why do people refuse to believe that rust on the spindles can cause this clicking sound. I read over and over again that people start changing u-joints and bearings, even after some people say that it did not fix their problem. Well, I guess I did it too. I Changed bearings and u-joints first and it did not fix the clicking sound. Granted, it's not always rust on the spindles. Rust does sound different than bad u-joints. And it sounds like it is coming from right behind the wheel. It's kind of a sound like metal fatigue/creaking sound only on take off, not the single clunk like a u-joint either, but usually 2-4 clicks. If it makes the clicking while actually moving then it's probaly not rust. Good luck, I hope you get it fixed.

Noises are really hard to nail down with limited onomatopoeia.
What I have is a thunk/clunk/shift now, when I get on the throttle hard. Say I'm on a roll, around 30 mph, and I want to kick it up to 50. I mash the pedal enough to force a downshift, and the car settles back just a bit, and I hear a clunk and feel a very, very slight shift/shudder to go with the clunk (It's not the downshift, the shift has already occured when the car settles and clunks.)
Is that spindle? I just began noticing it very recently. I still have the original u-joints, bushings, etc. on the car.
Re: Clickign noise > u Joints?? Driveshaft? (5abivt)
Mine does it too but only from a stop or from a slow roll. I was thinking that it was the driveshaft beam flexing and moving slightly under the torque of initial acceleration. I really need a buddy with a lift in thier garage. :D

Re: Clickign noise > u Joints?? Driveshaft? (5abivt)
Welcome to my nightmare!! :mad I've been trying to get to the bottom of this for some time now...Recently I did a search on this forum under the word "clicking" and there's a real good post by "92LT1Roadster" that explains the dampner in the half shafts and how they come loose. Now I'm not saying that it couldn't be Ujoints or rust on the spindles, but "92" introuced something I hadn't known before. My plan is to replace the half shaft on the driver's side as I'm pretty sure that's the culprit
(I wish I knew how to create a link to "92's" post but if you go our search engine and type in "clicking", use past posts and search the C4 Tech area, you'll find it)
