Default 1986 Window Ribbon

I am looking for detailed instructions on replacing my window ribbon. There are many threads on the newer style install. Right now its not in the budget. The window goes up and down just very slow going half way up. Maybe, it just needs a good cleaning. I have been searching but; cannot find the thread.

Any help would be appreciated..

I would try cleaning and lubing it first. People have noticed a difference after doing that. It's on my list of to do projects, but at the bottom since mine aren't that bad, yet.

What was the procedure to do this? Difficulty factor?

Is the ribbon broken? If not, it doesn't need replacing. If you just want to lube it, take the door panel off, and you should be able to see what you need to do.

Agreed. Procedure is a very strong word to describe this. I lubed whatever I could reach and cleaned out any stuff dirty grease I could reach. If the ribbon is broken Dorman offers a cheap off the shelf replacement for about 20 dollars.

A little carb cleaner to clean and white lithium grease to lube. Do NOT use anything containing acetone to clean the plastic, just the metal tracks.

Well, I tried cleaning the ribbon. Just by looking at it I was nervous about 30yr old plastic. The window went up and down twice before breaking. I just had to laugh. The good news is that my passenger side has the new scissor type installed. I decided to buy the scissor for the driver's side. This is exactly what I didn't want to do but; its expected with this car.

BTW...I found the regulator on Amazon brand new ACDelco part #22063225 for $200 shipped. I hope this is the end of the window problems!!

Good grief! Laughing was probably the best reaction. I might have thrown something lol. At least the door panel is already off! Thanks for the amazon find.

Hi
The ribon type window regulator is slow full stop.
Upgrade to the later window regulators, you will be kicking yourself that you put up with the slow window regulators.

I did this many years ago, and can guarantee you will have fast glass.
I you need to drill one hole into the bottom door frame all else bolts right up.

You should be able to get some good second hand ones quite cheap too.

My 86e did not require any drilling.
The late model scissors fit without needing adjustment.
I paid 50 bucks for it on fleah bay

The replacement ribbon can be found at the local parts store.
On the emergency rack under a Blow-Par window ribbon replacement.

Well everyone was right. Its not worth changing the ribbon. I took my time but; changing the regulator is not that hard. If you are going through all the trouble of taking out the old regulator to change the ribbon, you might as well change the regulator to the newer style.

Know of any good instructions on adjusting the window?

Should the window sit flat down in the regulator? Noticed you can lift the rear of the glass up. Didn't see that mentioned as an adjustment option. So assumed the glass should be sitting all the way flat when you tighten the 3 regulator mounting bolts.

Its really hit or miss. I just adjusted the window a little at a time. I didn't have a technique just luck.

Had installed a new top on and noticed the glass on passenger side didn't make contact at all with the b-pillar weatherstripping while the new top was on. Talking like a 4mm gap. With no top, or old top, the glass touches just fine. Top 2 inches of glass on driver side doesn't touch the weatherstripping with new top on. I put the old weatherstripping on new top, but that didn't change anything.

Loosened the window to move it around to see if that would fix it for the new top, but just made the 4mm gap between glass and b-pillar weatherstripping greater.

I have a thread on Corvette Italia Forum C4,it's very detailed, with lots of pics, you don't need understand italian,or translate it,just watch pics and you can go through. If your ribbon it's ok,you just need to clean and lubricate, but,in my case i din't obtain any gain in motor/window work.
