Last fall when I put my vette in storage apparently the antenna motor kept running after I shut the car off. So today the battery was dead. When I put the charger on it the antenna motor started running but the antenna did nothing. Is the antenna repairable or do I need a new one ? they appear to be quite spendy !

same thing happened on my 85. sounds like your motor is good but the plastic ribbon broke inside the mast. you can buy a new ribbon from one of the usual vendors for about 20 bucks. toughest part of the install is crawling around under the back end and snaking your arm up there to remove the nut holding the antenna to the body. tip is to remove the taillight and go in from there. also a pita was drilling out rivets on the motor assembly. did mine about 8 years ago and still working fine. good luck.
There are great instructional websites on replacing the antenna mast. It's not too difficult to do. I just went with a hidden antenna on my 86. If you need the motor they are expensive if you can find one. Don't buy from ecklers they are on back order forever. Good luck!

Plugged it in and tucked it under my rear hatch trim. Then I used a silicone plug for the antenna hole.
Reception has been great. Just a different solution to the antenna problem. Sleeker and definitely cheaper! And I don't have to worry about any more problems.
wow.....what a fix....you are the man....I rarely play the radio...it looks really clean great job and advice....I love the forum...
Thanks, glad to help. It was a little gamble as there's mixed reviews with those type of antennas. But for $10 what did I have to lose besides $10. If you go this route the antenna connector is made to connect to the back of a headunit. It's a different style connector than the one at the back of the car. It will plug into the cable in the back of the car and connect but not securely. I just wrapped electrical tape around the connection to secure it. It works great. I get every radio station.

I have a write up somewhere to fix the broken mast. It breaks just at the copper hook. Bend the hook straight and drill out the plastic, put the rod back in and bend the copper hook back to movein the gear. If it binds it will break .
Lube the plastic rod(I used caliper grease) and bend the mast nice and straight .I use HD radio so I think I will need long antennae.FREE

Also, if you're going to replace the antenae motor or just the antenae, I replaced the antenae a couple yrs. ago on my 87.......the mistake I made was not updating to an 88...
My 1985's antenna stopped working and the motor was running. Disconnected the plug wiring near the rear latch and radio reception has been fine for the last 10 years in town. Antenna is down.
And where do you buy thoughs hidden antenaes? Also, if you're going to replace the antenae motor or just the antenae, I replaced the antenae a couple yrs. ago on my 87.......the mistake I made was not updating to an 88...
