Default U-joints again

For everyone interested, the Spicer part number for the halfshaft joints is 5-447X. It seems the ones NAPA carries(their part number 232) are made by Precision.

I recently replaced all four in my car. The Spicer distributor said that the 5-447X U joints had been superceded or had a substitute. Part number, 5-697X comes to mind, but that may be wrong. It was a few bucks cheaper. I ased to see them side by side with the 5-447X joints. The "newer" number had a hollow sided spider (cross). It looked as though it was about half as strong as the origionals. Buyer beware!!! Not ALL genuine Spicer U joints are created equal. Good luck.

I got the part number from Dana, which owns Spicer now. If you run across something with the other number drop me an email. The ones I picked up today were in a Spicer box with 5-447X on it. They look very strong and are quit heavy.

As some trivia, Dana has always owned Spicer. My father worked for Dana for over 40 years. He was QC manager for the Spicer joint division in Pottstown, PA, for several years in the mid 60's and was later plant manager of the Dana Ft. Wayne rear axle plant. My family heritage is one of the reasons I feel connected to Corvettes, plus I was born in '53 too!
