Default 84 egr

During some `normal maintenance` on my 84 (redoing the o rings and gaskets on one injector that was causing some gas pooling, turned out it was the gasket) I noticed the vacuum line to the egr was broken. Its a small plastic line almost more like a wired, the plug end is broke and when I tried to turn it to go anyway I broke the plastic pipe/hose in the middle.

It looks like this[IMG][/IMG]

Can I just replace the hose or pipe part?

Also the connector (electrical) has been disconnected, will that keep it from being a vacuum leak for now? And why would someone have disconnected it?

Having the electrical plug off the control solenoid should prevent a vacuum leak...provided you have a sound hose and connection from the manifold to the solenoid and the solenoid isn't stuck open.

The rubber boots on the ends of the hard plastic lines can come off. Will they at this point, w/o breaking the plastic line?

That hose that goes to the egr itself broke right in the middle. Im thinking maybe a small piece of vacuum hose could slide over it?

Or I can try to see if the boot on the other end will come off or the hose pull out of the boot.

The boot at the egr end broke thats what started it all or it was already broke. I tried turning to get it on at a different angle to try to push it back on and snap broke.

Thank you again

Any idea why someone would disconnect the electrical connector?

Yes a piece of vacuum line over the plastic will work.

IDK why someone would have disconnected it.

If you need to get it out of the solenoid do it slowly, I'd go ahead and break the end of the hard line off near the solenoid, get a thin pair of needle noise pliers and gently work the ends stuck in the solenoid out.

That's how I got mine out before putting new hard line in it's place.

Any reason I shouldnt put the electrical connector back on once I have the vacuum part done? Something to watch for? I guess the check engine light will be my guide lol

What happens if the egr isnt hooked up? Detonation?

The broken end I have inside I got the boot off of pretty easy gradually turning it and it worked free. Of course that boot is broken lol. If I can I will just get some line that will fit over the broken line. Otherwise I`ll carefully attempt to remove that other end from its boot.

You can buy the plastic vacuum line in 3 foot lengths at auto parts stores. It comes in three sizes, two very close and one way too big. I vaguely recall that 3/32" worked for me. My car has two different sizes, so you'll need to match up what you have with what they have.

You can bend the plastic tubing by heating it up to soften it. I use a heat gun. The temperature is critical. Too little heat and nothing happens. Too much and it melts. I have found that I put the tubing on the car and engine heat will soften the tubing enough that it forms itself over time.

The rubber part marked "84" in the picture unplugs from the EGR solenoid. That should make it easier to work with. The factory glued the rubber parts on to the tubing but I have not been able to find the magic glue that will stick to both the rubber and the plastic. The plastic is just too smooth and nothing sticks.

Chris Petris did an article on cleaning the EGR valve. The seat unscrews and gives access to the pintle. I'm in St. Louis right now for the NCCC meetings so I don't have my bookmarks available. You might be able to find it by doing a Google search on "Chris Petris EGR valve". I just did the search, so here ya go:

Thanks Cliff one of these times youre in St Louis we could say hi sometime.

Im going to try putting some small rubber hose over the broken tubing first. I dont know if theres any reason to just leave it not hooked up.
