My 92 has 3:45 rear. What is a good upgrade for street and autocross.
Cost??problems??
I just installed 4.10 VIPer gears over the winter. This is a great mod for the street/strip, not sure about autocross. Cost was $300 for the gears/install kit and $200 to install the gears in the diff. I dropped the diff myself because the local Vette specialists wanted $1000-$1200 for a turnkey install (drop it off with 3.45, pick it up with 4.10 gears). With the money I saved I bought a set of Q1A 12 wat adjustable shocks.
Polo,
The best gears for an auto/LT1 are 3.54 or 3.73 because the overdrive in an auto is 0.7. A 4.10 gear in an auto is really rev'ing on the freeway. A 6-speed/LT1/4 has a 0.5 overdrive, so you can get away with a little more gear without excessive revs in the freeway.
BTW, for L98, the best gears are lower, like 3.45 for a 6 speed, 3.07 for an auto trans.
My 96 LT4 MN6 has 4.11 gears from Tom's differentials and I have to say it is the best mod I've made... it will put a smile on your face period. 0-100 improvement is dramatic and there is plently of top end left. 6th gear now pulls nicely. Just my opinion...
Cost for R&P plus full install kit (bearings etc) from Tom $289
I have a '93 auto and I put 373's in it. The bad thing was I ordered a new rear end from Mid Atlantic and it came through with a very bad hum. The MA vendor said I didn't give it the proper brake in period. The mechanic who installed it told me about the hum the day I picked it up. The vendor and Mid Atlantic would not take it back and I was stuck with the rebuild charge. It turned out that the pinion gear had a crack in it. So when push comes to shove it really cost me over $2000 and should have only cost me @ half that. I'll never deal with mid atlantic again. They more or less said too bad, so sad, don't call us because we don't want too hear it and don't give a rats a@#. They don't stand behind their vendors.
Sorry, you got me going on a sore subject.
