Default C5 Delco Bose in C4

Has anyone tried to update their 1984-89 Delco Bose cassette head with the 1997-04 Delco Bose cd head? I know the Metra wiring harness 70-1862 will fit but I am concerned about compatibility.

No way will the '97-'04 head fit into a C4 opening w/o extensive modifications. The later head is a lot wider. FYI, it's the same head unit that's in all the '95-99 trucks.

Aren't C5 and early C4 head units both 1.5 din? I have no idea if they're compatible, but I think they would similar size if they're both 1.5 din.

No.

C4 is double DIN. C5 is some weird GM only size. Wider, and maybe ~1.5 DIN tall?

Use the CD slot as a "constant" size reference...

84-89 are 1.5 DIN.

90-96 are double DIN.

Yes. I missed that the OP's car is an earlier C4, so you're right, 1.5 DIN.

I still don't think a C5 head will fit easily though. Like I said, it's wider than a "standard DIN" width.

There is a guy on the popular auction site that sells mid 90's F body delco bose CD units that are a drop into pre '89 C4's. Nice thing is that the head unit has white lettering on black like the original cassette unit. Very OEM looking if you ask me. Search for CD Bose C4 Corvette.

The dimensions are the same 8"X3 7/16"X5". The face is. 3 5/8"X8 1/4". I have one from a Chevy truck in my '87 right now. $20 at the junkyard the sound quality is not up to snuff and the balance control does not function correctly. I think the C5's are the same size. Has anybody else tried this?

If you're wanting to upgrade your head unit you might consider aftermarket instead of Delco/Bose. You can get GPS and better technology in a variety of units.

The 84-89 interior is also fairly easy to work with as far as customization goes. You can check out the thread for the work on mine. Audio Update. I squeezed the 8" Alpine into it.
