Last night I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and turned the key on to let the fuel pump cycle. I noticed a strange high-pitched hum and it seemed to be coming from the back of the alternator. Does the regulator make noise? Anyone else ever noticed this, and is it normal?
Re: Engine off, key on, funny alternator noise (Rich B.)
I'm almost certain it was coming from the alternator. I didn't hear it until the fuel pump had shut off, so the only other thing "on" was the instrument panel (well, at least the only obvious thing on. I know ECM, etc..) I have two other cars, a 2000 Z28 and a '98 Olds Intrigue, 3.8. Neither of them make a similar noise. Curious...
Somebody with a similar model Vette, listen to yours and see if you hear it.
Re: Engine off, key on, funny alternator noise (Rich B.)
The diodes in the alt will make noise when it's having to regulate power in the elect system.
...If his engine is off, the alternator isn't turning or putting out electricity...The diodes aren't converting anything...
What's it regulating???
Try it on yours :jester :p: . See how long your alternator lasts when doing this for a long time. It wears out the diodes when you run lots of electric stuff when the engine isn't turning the alt.

You first!!! :D  :p:
I had my battery go completely dead last week...I was working on the interior, and closed the door; it was closed, but not latched...The next day it was DOA...
That's a little too close adjustment on the door switches...And with the delay, you can't tell unless you stand around for a couple minutes...
Come to think of it, I don't need no stinking delay...Anyone know how to eliminate that???
