After 2 weeks and 4 days at the tranny shop, and $643, I finally have an overdrive that works. I wasn't patient enough to let them order the switch and install it so I'll do that myself, I just can't turn it off right now if I want. I'm getting close to 10mpg better fuel economy on the hwy.(about 28) and it's just a very trick feature. Only thing I don't like is when you are doing a half throttle acceleration and you shift into second, it almost instantly engages the OD. I'm sure it's a gas saver but I lose all power unless I grab alot of throttle to get the tranny to downshift. I do love when I'm cruising down the hwy in OD at about 65 and I stomp the gas and it downshifts so I can pass someone. I don't know what all the hate is about with these trannys, they are fun and fairly convienient. Anyone know the mileages before fluid and filter change on the OD's? Oh yeah, almost forgot to put what was done. I got a full soft parts rebuild, and there was some part with 48 springs in it that was completely mangled that was replaced.......that's about it.

People just hate them because they break. Other than that they are just fine. The actual tranny part is a nice unit. The overdrive wasn't the best designed piece that's all.
I'm ordering the part on saturday, so I'll possibly start on wednesday. I looked in the haynes manual and it looked simple. I'm sure I'll have a question or two for you though Scorp.
Got it. One thing I am missing....THE SWITCH....I could have sworn that I saw it in the Ecklers restoration section. I can't find it now, where would be my best chances of finding the switch?
Today for about 5 minutes my OD would engage while in 1st gear. What the heck? It would try to shift in between 2500 and 3000, even at WOT. It went away and hasn't done it anymore. Kind of strange I thought.
I'm not sure about the '87s but I could get OD in 1st before the switch was rewired. It would only work when downshifting to 1st with the OD engaged and then rolling into the throttle slowly.

Same for '87. 1st/OD is available under some (few) circumstances.

I've been able to get the OD to occasionally work in 1st on my 88 also.
As to mileage/time for OD fluid changes, the 88 GM Factory Manual says to change the OD fluid every 30,000 miles. I have been changing fluid and filter every 2 years. This turns out to be the same interval recommended by Corvette Fever editor Chris Petris in the August issue. Mr Petris says that the fluid attarcts moisture turning it acidic over time and that his why he recommends changing every 2 years.
He recommends using Mobil 1 Dexron III transmission fluid for the OD and Mobil 1 synthetic 75-90W gear oil in the manual transmission.
