Default Steering Column Woes

The turn signal stalk is screwed up on my 93 Vette. It's very loose and will not work when pushing up for a right hand turn. It just flops back to the starting position. Even if I hold it up, the turn signal doesn't work. Seems to work fine when pushed down for left hand turns. Is this something I might be able to fix or is it broken and in need of replacement?

If it is indeed broken, I guess I might has well get the whole column fixed since it has some play in it.

Please advise. Thanks.

The stalk may be broken. I just went through this problem on an 88 S15. Make sure the repair guys tighten all four bolts to fix the loose column problem and use loctite on the screws.

The stalk problem is a symptom of a bad turn signal switch problem, the screw that hold the piece that connects it to the signal switch is loose or the piece that connects the stalk needs a slight adjustment.

The truck I am borrowing had the loose column problem which I fixed and then discovered that the turn signal did not work for left turns. The connector piece needed some adjustment on the truck to fix the turn signal.

Here is a picture of the metal piece that is the source of the problem on the truck.

Here is a picture of one screw that is needs to be tighten to fix the loose column problem. There are four of them and the metal piece covering them needs to be removed to do the job right.

This is a link to the column fix procedure.

Its for a Grand National so some things will be different on your vette but not much. The column looks a lot like the way my 1973 Catalina column was put together.

If you go in there, be sure to disconnect the battery and wait about 5 minutes so the air bag power will discharge. I wrote a more detailed write up on how to get to the loose scres to a recent post on a tilit column problem here on the forum.
