So i finally installed my new bosch III injectors today and immediately my old hesitation under light acceleration was cleared up. I was so happy been chasing this issue for a few weeks. Went down the rode driving normal until up to temp and gave it a romp, pulled strong but about 5500 rpms it stopped pulling and backfired and immediately through a CEL. So pulled over and checked the code got code 36. Weird thing is car still runs fine, has no noticeable power loss and revs freely to 6k. Only think that has changed is it is now hard to start(spins about 4-5 times before cranking) whereas before it was instant. Unplugged battery to clear code and still remains as does the cranking problem...ANY IDEAS? BTW Opti is a Delphi Unit installed in 2012
Is there anychance its a wire or plug or something to or from the opti, like i said its a relatively new opti, and the car still runs great just hard to start all of a sudden and i cant get the CEL to go away. Only other time I ever had a bad opti was my 95 T/a and it ran like ISH and didnt throw a code?
Can you point out "the associated wiring" and any way to diagnose this problem without changing the opti?
here is a 4 wire (maybe 5 on a 92) pigtail harness coming from the opti and running up the pass side of the intake to a plug right on top of the pass side near the fuel rail. This is how the opti communicates with the ECM. You could try checking your signals at the plug with straight pins pushed into the backside of the plug.
It is possible that the plug got disturbed or a wire got broken while changing the injectors. It is worth checking as they are in close proximity.

Do you have the FSM? Just do the diagnostics for the code from the start. The connector at the opti could be culprit or the other end of the harness but to avoid chasing "WAG" just do the diagnostics from scratch. Joe, Jim, Bob. Phil and his cousin will be of little use.
I have intimate knowledge of how optisparks work and in fact I seek out cars with opti problems and buy them. Thanks to my dealings with a certain vendor I have learned everything I can about how optisparks work.
His problem is between the ECM and the optical sensor but I'd start at the connector between the fuel injectors since they've been messing around right there.
Additionally, can someone explain why the car still runs Great in all conditions? Wouldnt it run poor with a bad opti? Like i said the only issue is a SLIGHTLY more difficult start up? Is it maybe just the CEL doesnt wanna reset with a DCed battery?
First off check the backside of each wire going into that connector from both sides. Tug on them a little and make sure they are seated. I stuck straight pins into the backside and checked voltage while the engine was running to find a heat related opti failure.
Starting in 93 they used a flat 4 wire plug and each terminal is marked. I converted my 92 to a 4 wire connector when I bought the junk Petris opti. Give me a little time today and I'll look through my old pics.
This connector has ABCD marks on the terminals. I believe A is the red wire with the probe in it and B is the purple/white wire
