I think my fuel pump is bad: On the way home tonight, the engine in my '85 started to sputter. It kept running and I made it home, but the CE light came on and I got a code 44. The book says that this is lean exhaust. When I turn the ignition on, I hear the fuel pump sort of faintly chatter. The local parts store wants $50 for a new pump. Two questions: could it be anything else, and should I buy an aftermarket pump, or a GM pump or some kind of upgraded pump?
Fuel pump isn't too bad in the 85, mine went last year. Here's a tip, you can take it out through the top, without dropping the tank. It can come out the top if you take off the gas cap door and the black plate under it:
My vette would not stay running long enough to go anywhere so I had different synthoms. I bought one at Pep boys for like $80, been fine for a year now. I did have to swap the polarity on the one I bought.
Is the pump getting 12V of something less? I would be sure that it is before I just replaced it. Code 44 is a lean condition reported by your O2 sensor(s). There are several other things that can cause a code 44. You might check your fuel pressure to see what your pump is putting out. If it's OK in the driveway, maybe driving it around the block with the pressure guage attached to the windshield so you can monitor it.
When you turn on the ignition, the fuel pump will turn on for 2 seconds then shut off if the car isn't started. You could have a clogged fuel filter. I would change this first, reset the ECM and see how it runs.
