Default 2 questions?

I bought a 95 mn6 32k last fall plan on trackdays and street. How well does the zf 6 speed hold up? the brakes appear to be 13 inch front rotors and say j55. they worked very well on my first track day. Are they the same brakes as zr1 and grandsport? doing track days I need to find affordable pads and rotors that will hold up good.I can get gm parts at a good discount from my brother on my 99frc I used C5 z06 front pads and rotors and they lasted and stopped good. thanks in advance

The 6 speed will hold up just fine, if it has the proper oil level in it.

Brakes are the same as is on the ZR-1 and GS. According to most, they should be fine for track use and I would agree, using a good pad and fluid.

I use Hawk HP+ on my '92 w/a C5 upgrade and they work great for me on track days. There are plenty of other options that work well too.

I'd highly recommend the Hawk Pads over OEM Pads for track use. The factory pads are designed to work dead cold, and to be quiet, and not to dust too much. They're not designed to work at consistently high temps, or to have linear coefficient of friction as they get hot. Brake pads (like tires) are a big compromise between different (and often competing) characteristics - track use will get pad temps to levels that are generally not seen in street use. You want brake pads that are designed to live in that environment, not pads that are designed not to squeal on 5 MPH stops....

Tom400CFI is absolutely correct - the 13" Brake system is the same as the one on the ZR1 and all the 1996's (including the Gran Sport), and the ZF Gearbox is right at home on a road race course (it might be a good idea to change the trans fluid to a good synthetic fluid if it's been in there for quite a while).

I highly recommend going to a good DOT 4 Brake Fluid, and doing a complete flush (plan on running two quarts through the system). Using the brakes gets the fluid hot, and you don't want to boil brake fluid as you really use the brakes at the end of a long straight....

Take a look at Carbotech pads for track duty. I will list 2 of them below, they can be driven on the street safely and will out perform GM pads and hawk, Also, highly recommend DOT4 fluid. I would run Carbotech XP10 front and XP8 rear.

Carbotech™ XP10™

When Carbotech™ unleashed the XP10™ to the general public it immediately gathered multiple regional, divisional, and national championships. The XP10™ has a very strong initial bite with a coefficient of friction and rotor friendliness unmatched in the industry. Fade resistance is in excess of 1475°F (801°C). XP10™ still maintains the highly praised release, excellent modulation and rotor friendliness that have made all Carbotech™ compounds so successful. Carbotech™ XP10™ is not recommended as a daily-driven street pad due to possible elevated levels of dust and noise.

Carbotech™ XP8™

A high torque brake compound with a wide operating temperature range of 200°F-1250°F+ (93°C to 676°C+). Carbotech™ XP8™ is the first of our racing compounds. Good initial bite at race temperatures, high coefficient of friction, excellent modulation and release characteristics. Extremely high fade resistance and very rotor friendly. Perfect for track day use with any tire and can still be driven safely to and from the track. Carbotech™ does NOT recommended XP8™ as a daily driven street pad due to elevated levels of dust and noise. Carbotech™ XP8™ is a great compound on the front & rear of most open wheel and sports racers.

XP10 $199 XP8 $154

Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™ The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.
