Can EGR shield start on fire?
My EGR shield wasn't looking too attractive, so I wrapped some of that high-temp tape (looks like tinfoil) around the entire shield. It looks beautiful now, but there's a constant burning/burnt smell from the shield sometimes while driving and after shutdown. Is this something to be concerned about?

Probably
you are burning something, hence smoke and smell.
Beware MAD replacement heat shields with the velcro. They also burn
GM replacement isn't that expensive

You should likely lose the tape and try some heavy duty Al foil.
And wrap it a little loosely so as not to compress the inuslating material undernieth.
