Default new oem steering wheel question

ok so my old oem steering wheel was straight no pulling or anything just old and falling apart - bought a new one on and had a guy at a shop put it on - now I noticed when my wheels are straight and steering wheel is to the right a little bit , I asked the guy and he said he has it set on " the line " and doesn't know why it would of off unless it was off before and he didn't see where the line was before he pulled off the old one - so should I have him just redo it and more it to the left a few notches or is it right being on the line and maybe its just a different issue ?

What year?...

My 91 steering wheel has a notch in one of the teeth which can only be installed in one position. If the steering wheel is off, the car might need an alignment?...

If the steering wheel does not have a notch in it, the steering wheel can just be removed and repositioned.

If the turn signals cancel properly both directions, the horn functions I believe I'd prefer having the front "toe" set correctly. You don't need a complete alignment just the toe set. I do believe the steering wheel can be pulled and relocated on '89 or earlier.

Does the shop do alignments as well as general repairs?

I just went through this exact same thing a few weeks ago..The GM guy installed the wheel with the marks lined up, and when I drove the car, the wheel was off a good bit.... I just went to Advance Auto and borrowed there wheel puller, pulled the wheel and moved it to the left a little.. Now the wheel is perfectly straight, and it only took me about 15 minites to complete the task..The marks are just reference points, moving the wheel either way has no effect on how it works ..Easy fix.....Or if you prefer, you can have the front end adjusted to center the wheel like WVZR-1 suggested.., your call......WW

Im guessing whoever pulled it last put it on crooked and then had the car alligned and they just alligned the wheels with the steering wheel like that.

That happened on my car. When i got it i changed the wheel and lined it up correctly and it was like 2-3 inches to the right and i had to go get the allignment re-done

There's what might/should work and then there's the "right way" to accomplish the fix. The important things to consider is the cancelling of the turn signals and horn operation. If you'd like all of that to function correctly and it does so presently "set the toe". If the cancelling is different left and right then remove the steering wheel to correct the cancelling function left and right. If after you've corrected that aspect of the steering wheel replacement and it's still off center - "set toe".

The '89 and earlier horn contact tower is a separate piece and is inserted into the steering wheel rather than relying on the post fixed to the cancelling cam that requires indexing on the later cars. You may be able to "fudge" the fix by moving the steering wheel and be done. Make sure you mark the steering wheel and the shaft before you just jump into the task.
