'84 parts from the cores can NOT be used in the later D36 for builds. The later '85+ D36 is much improved in both the differential internals and also the short-axles were changed and won't substitute.

instead of exchanging cores take it to some one local and see if they can do a rebuild. if all it needs is bearings and seals it should not be to much of a problem and may cost a lot less to.

There's nothing wrong with my current differential, that I know of.
I'm just thinking about changing the gears in the future to a lower ratio. Seemed to me the idea of just exchanging the pumpkin would be an easy way to do it.

Your '84 already has a 3.07 which is generally considered the "better" ratio for the earlier cars. So long as you've no issues there's no reason for concern, I certainly wouldn't look to be increasing the ratio with anything that's available presently.
