4+3 Fluids - Level Check
I'm leaking a little from the drain bolt - I think. The underside is pretty dirty from the dirt that's collected onto the oil that gets all over the underside.
Anyway, I've got the front end up on jack stands, high enough to squeeze myself under to check things out. There's 2 square head bolts and I can see that the forward one has the fluid on it. I get them both loose, but then realize that I need to see where the inspection holes are to see the fluid levels. Where the heck are they? I pulled the non-leaky bolt and it leaked what looks like 75/90W - must be the OD unit. The other bolt - more forward location - has the red fluid leak. That must be the tranny drain. :)
Now - my second question...
With the front end raised on jack stands, does this affect the level for the inspection hole? Will I be under filling it this way? Don't have a hoist for the entire car!
I did read that I need Dexron III in the tranny and 75/90 in the OD unit. 1.7 qts in the OD - right? And what's the capacity on the trans?
I'll use plumbers tape on the threads when I put it back together.
Thanks for all the quick help...
On the forward part (the 4-speed) there are two 3/8" square plugs on the passenger side. The lower one is the drain plug and is magnetic to pick up filings. The upper one is the fill & inspection hole. You want 2 pints (1 quart) of fluid in the 4-speed. The book calls for 80W90 gear oil. I recently put Mobil 1 Synthetic 75W90 and it has been great.
The rear section uses ATF (automatic tranny fluid). NOTHING ELSE!!!! I use Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in mine. Yes, it holds 1.7 quarts. There is only one 3/8" square plug for the overdrive, and it is on the driver's side. To empty the overdrive and change the filter you have to drop the pan which are all 10mm bolts.
With the front end only raised, YES it will be harder to determine if it is full or not. I use jackstands to try and get the O/D pan as level as possible. To fill the O/D you need to get a handheld pump and run the line into that hole where you took the plug out. That is the only way to really do it.
Is this a dealer only part?
