Default 1989 tail light questions

There is a black shim above and below each tail light lens on my 89 Corvette. What is the purpose of these shim like items? I am having the rear deck area painted, sun damage to clear coat, and want to remove the lens so area can be painted properly. Thought these shims might allow me to pop out lens but doesn't seem to work.
Thx in advance, Gasman3.

Did the previous owner have Black Out tail light lenses installed before?

Could be the two plastic wedges used to hold aftermarket lens grills in place.

Must be the answer. The shims look like the picture submitted. Must have removed the lenses and replaced the shims. Thanks.
