I assume you don't have a ALDL cable and a laptop to see what the ECM is actually doing, correct?

No I don't sorry, is there a different degree setting I could try and see what happens. It's only a slight ping would changing it to 8 or 4 degrees make a difference

Problem is that there is something else wrong, messing with the timing beyond what it should be set at is nothing but a bandaid

I know what your saying, but it hasn't been pinging since I touched the timing, but I don't know what it was at befor

The timing was probably to far advanced before, which caused the pinging. Also, are you filling with Premium fuel which is required for the later L98 engines?...

Premium fuel burns at a slower rate than regular fuel which is why it is required on high compression engines which the 90-91 Speed Density L98's are, (10.25:1 compression compared to 9.5:1 for the earlier L98's).

If Regular fuel is used, the ECM will Retard engine timing to prevent detonation, at a slight loss of engine performance.

Ok, so do you have an idea where I could put the timing to see if I can get rid of the Ping, and try and work out what's going on

Set the timing to the manufacturers specs which is 6* btdc and Always, use Premium fuel.
