Just wanted to know if anyone knows how to gain
More horsepower without having to add on to the engine. Something simple , maybe bolt on. I have a 87 convertible . thanks again.
So far, you've gotten recommendations that run the gamut. How about telling us what your performance goals are, and what you budget is?
Best big bang for the buck may be an LS conversion...
Yep.
Also, exhaust wrap, better/lighter/slipperier engine oil and heat shielding around the air filter and tube/pipe. Just look at everything on your car and think "how can I make this better and more efficient, how much power will I get and how much will it cost me".. then do the math.

While we are splitting hairs....
For the novice, wouldn't "not going into the engine" include intake/exhaust manifolds? For the experienced builder, "not going into the engine" would mean the long-block.
Wait! Manifolds bolt-on, right? Wait! So do heads! So do main caps and oil pans! LOL
"Bolt-ons" CAN mean different things to different people.

Only if you a splitting hairs.
To a car guy boltons are anything that does not require going into the engine..
I just did a LS swap, so for me that's like starting all over again. The vette is just about, at the point, were I'm pleased with the swap. I needed to finish the A/C system. So now I'm at the performance part.Bolt-ons to me is, heads, cam, intake converter and exhaust.
I've tried and have change a lot of parts in my C4 from engine to a solid 9" rear, which I broke the spider gears and pulled it back out of the car. I've always wanted it to be a daily driver and something my wife, would not mind riding in. When I had the SBC in it, I got to the point were I hated driving it, the smell and sound of the exhaust, the flat spot, under 2500 rpms, and most of all the ECM, going crazy when ever it wants. And if we look at a lot of the post in the C4 section, it is ECM related. Ch@0s thanks again you were BIG HELP with me getting my swap together.

Wow Randy, I think you may hold the record for the most engine combos in your car.
Kudos to you for not being afraid to scrap a combo and start over from scratch
For me, bolt ons always meant any mods done without digging into the engine (stock heads/cam). For me this included headers, intake swap, RRs, injectors, computer tweaks, pulleys, etc., etc. I know guys will argue the piont, but these little changes DO add up over time. The question is whether or not its cost effective.

IMO If you are going to do Heads and cam eventually then you are prepared. So going bolts-ons first is a great start. It does make a big difference This is my plan with MY DD GTO.
