Where can I pick up a detent cable/ kick-down cable for 1990 corvette 700r4 transmission . Would regular parts stores have it or is it something you would need from the dealer. Just had transmission redone and I want to replace it.
What you want is a TV (Throttle Valve) cable. Obviously a completely different thing.
I believe a TV cable and a Detent cable are the same thing..When I looked them up I get the same picture for both searches..There are only three cables I know of on the TB, the TV cable, the throttle cable, and the Cruise control cable..WW
The detents are the shifter parts inside the transmission. The detent mechanism is called a "rooster comb", which I think is a very descriptive name. There is a roller on a spring that drops into the detents and that's the clicking sound you get when you shift from gear to gear. The detent mechanism is in the lower right corner of this picture (sorry for the quality -- not my picture):
The TV cable causes the transmission pressure to vary with throttle opening. It has NOTHING to do with detents.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I actually went to the dealership and 57 dollars later I have the cable.
I'm sure the parts guy/gal understood your needs. Your original post did quite well actually, I believe most understood and TV, kick-down, detent have been used (maybe incorrectly) synonymously for years. I surprised Cliff didn't pick up on it.
